Every year, more and more people become beekeepers especially in urban areas.  Varroa mites, and the viruses they transmit, are a serious threat to bees. Knowing how to manage mites has never been more important and we are here to help.

  •  We will show a video and demo how to monitor your mite level by doing the powder sugar roll test.  

  • We will thoroughly cover methods to prevent mite levels from rising like drone frames, robbing screens, and splitting your hive.  

  • We will also detail the organic treatments to use when your mite levels get too high:  Mite Away, oxalic acid dribble, and oxalic vaporization.  Learn how to do minimal treatment and make sure it works when you do it.

Jennifer Radtke has 14 years experience keeping bees in her backyard in Oakland/Berkeley, California, an urban area that has developed serious varroa mite issues.  She will share her tips and tricks for keeping mite levels low in an urban environment with a high density of hives.
